ADB sets management workshop on Aug. 7-8

THE Asian Development Bank will conduct a management workshop for the partners of its Regional Technical Assistance Project (RETA) on institutionalizing results focused project design and management on Aug. 7 and 8 at the Casa Escaño in Cebu City.

Seven partner institutions in Cebu and the Visayas were selected to participate in this project. These are the local government of Alcoy, Boljoon, Oslob, Camotes and Pinamungahan towns; the Bacolod Provincial Hospital and the Justice and the Peace and Integrity of Creation of the University of San Carlos.

Cebu mayors told: Close dumpsite in 30 days

ENVIRONMENT lawyers have given the mayors of 32 towns in the province a month to close down their open dump sites or face law suits for violating national laws.

A notice to sue was sent to the mayors through registered mail.

The mayors were those identified by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) as those who have not yet implemented Republic Act 9003, the “Solid Waste Management Act of 2001.”

Capitol gets P70M for road repairs

ABOUT P70 million for road repair will be released to the Cebu provincial government to fix roads in southern Cebu which was battered by waves and flooding during a storm early this year.

Repair will cover Natalio Bacalso Avenue, Boljoon to Santander, Santander-Barili-Toledo road and the Sambaoan to Alegria section.

A memorandum of agreement for the funds was signed yesterday by Gov. Gwen Garcia and Eng.Fernando Cruz, head of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 2nd engineering district.

Workers from the local governments will be hired for the road projects to be completed in 105 days.

Capitol warns vs. ‘bikini open’ events

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Resort owners and event organizers planning to stage “bikini open” type activities in Cebu province during the Holy Week face stiff penalties for doing so, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia warned Monday.

The governor pointed to the Provincial Women’s Code that prohibits indecent activities like bikini contests since it “humiliates women.”

Companies, which insist in holding these programs, will face possible revocation of their business permits and a fine of P5,000 or both.

Boljoon finds belong to national gov’t

The gold jewelry unearthed by archaeologists from the church compound in Boljoon town, southern Cebu, belong to the Philippine government, not the Archdiocese of Cebu, said archaeologist Jose Eleazar “Jobers” Bersales.

“The artifacts are properties of the Philippine state according to the National Museum law,” Bersales said.

Republic Act 8492 or the National Museum Act of 1998 states that “as a scientific institution, the (National) Museum shall continue to conduct basic and systematic research programs combining integrated laboratory and field work in anthropology and archeology, geology and paleontology, botany and zoology.”
