Capitol, Boljoon parish ink pact to preserve artifacts

CEBU – The Cebu Provincial Government and the Boljoon Parish have signed an agreement for the preservation of the artifacts that were discovered by an archaeologist and students from the University of San Carlos at the town’s church grounds.

Capitol consultant on heritage affairs Jose Eleazar Bersales and Boljoon parish priest Fr. Milton Medida have signed a custodial agreement to ensure the preservation of the artifacts.

Bersales conducted archaeological excavations on the grounds of Boljoon Church, which allegedly used to be the town’s burial site way back in the 16th century, and recovered remains of at least 26 people and some of their belongings.

The gold mask of Plaza Independencia

By Jobers Bersales

On the first day of monitoring excavation activities at the Plaza Independencia, last Monday alone, a very important treasure that Cebuanos can very well be proud of was recovered: a death mask made of hastily etched thin gold sheets. A second one, or just a piece of it (one covering the eyes) was also recovered in the same location. These are vital proofs of the wealth of pre-Hispanic Cebuanos and the burial practices they carried out for their dearly departed.

No crystal skulls, no alien corpses were found. But the archaeological excavations in Boljoon town, south of Cebu, offer just as interesting—and more realistic—finds on Cebuano culture and tradition.

New discoveries have led to more questions, that need expert study, said Jose Eleazar “Jobers” Bersales, chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of San Carlos.

Bersales reported the group’s findings in last Thursday’s lecture held at the Cebu Cathedral Museum that was also attended by Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

Remains, artifacts found in Boljoon

By Jujemay G. Awit
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

EVIDENCE of pre-Spanish trade and industry in Cebu were found in Boljoon town, right in front of the Nuestra Senora Virgen del Patrocinio Parish Church.

Different kinds of artifacts and nine burials were found at the third archaeological excavation by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of San Carlos.

The recent excavation, done over a period of one month, was 60 to 70 centimeters deep.

Among those recovered was a large bent gold earring found at the right ear of a male skeleton. The tube earring is said to date back from the 14th to 16th century.
